Jeffrey S. Shapiro

​Mr. Shapiro is a former Washington, D.C. prosecutor, former senior U.S. government official and nationally recognized investigative journalist and practicing attorney.  He has spent more than 25 years investigating, analyzing and reporting on high profile criminal and civil legal cases, as well as U.S. political affairs and international relations and foreign policy matters.

Mr. Shapiro’s legal career stemmed from his journalism experiences, which placed him in the center of some of the world’s most significant criminal justice and civil legal matters, high-profile political affairs and international challenges around the world.  He started his career investigating the murder of JonBenet Ramsey in Colorado where he also covered the Columbine shootings for Time magazine and the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case for CBS’ 48 Hours Investigates.

Shortly thereafter, Mr. Shapiro covered the criminal justice and prison system in the New York City metropolitan area for Gannett’s Journal News. During this time, he covered the Sept. 11 attacks on location at Ground Zero and broke a world renown story that the FBI was investigating possible al-Qaeda leaks about their plans prior to the collapse of the Twin Towers. The story was confirmed by NYC officials and verified by Newsweek and MSNBC. 

After graduating law school from University of Florida, Mr. Shapiro served as a prosecutor and trial lawyer for the District of Columbia, focusing on First Amendment cases, including unlawful protests at the U.S. Capitol. Mr. Shapiro has tried 34 criminal cases, securing 28 victories for the District, including convicting a demonstrator who attacked then U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice inside the U.S. House of Representatives, and later, 31 unlawful U.S. Capitol protestors who were prosecuted as co-defendants in the same trial.

Subsequently, Mr. Shapiro worked as a crisis manager and investigative lawyer for private firms and clients on litigation-related matters.  He served general counsel for a D.C.-based firm focused on international investigations and litigation.

Throughout his career, Mr. Shapiro has made dozens of national news appearances and authored hundreds of news articles and columns for major publications including the Wall Street JournalLos Angeles Times and Miami Herald. Mr. Shapiro has also worked for the Washington Times as an investigative journalist and legal analyst writing stories that ranged from foreign affairs and transnational law to U.S. constitutional law. His stories focus on legal cases and government operations involving international matters, U.S. federal agencies and federal court litigation.  His most notable reporting includes front-page stories about the 2011 NATO Intervention in Libya, unexamined DNA evidence from the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the USAF’s use of Russian rocket engines to launch U.S. national security satellites.

In 2017, Mr. Shapiro was appointed as a senior government official at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, serving nearly four years as both a senior advisor and Director of the Miami-based U.S. Office of Cuba Broadcasting.  During this time, Mr. Shapiro worked closely with U.S. government officials and pro-democracy leaders from Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. In 2018, he accepted an appointment with U.S. Army Reserve Legal Command as a military officer, and currently serves in the reserve component as a Judge Advocate.
